History

Architect Ton Alberts

Ton Alberts was born in 1927 in Antwerp, Belgium and shortly afterwards moved to Amsterdam. After a severe illness, that deepened his understanding, he came in touch with different Yoga-directions. Alberts began searching for ways to express esoteric principles in designing and constructing housing, buildings and social projects. The result was the specific ‘organic’ architecture which is practiced by Alberts & Van Huut since 1963.
In the semester 1993/94 Alberts occupied, following many prominent Dutch people, the ‘Erasmus Chair’ at the Harvard University in Boston, USA. Alberts departed this life at the age of 72.

The Office

The first building projects date back to 1963, the year the practice was established. Since then, the office has gained an tremendous amount of experience concerning the influence of nature and its interaction with the architectural environment on the well being of mankind. This ever growing experience creates a bond of trust with our clients, to come together and create designs that have a positive influence on the human life cycle.

People are influenced by their environment: everything is nourishment. We do not only nourish ourselves with food, but also with what we see and hear and with our impressions. All this determines our being, although we are not always aware of this.

Our designs do not merely consist of abstract or cubical spaces: we believe spaces in this form make people static. We focus on freer forms to make people more dynamic, therefore nature is our inspiration. These forms bring a friendlier, more harmonic and freer feeling in people. Uniformity leads to boredom and may be a negative stimuli. When you are walking through old towns and historical cities, the enormous variety and beauty of forms are remarkable. Much variety, no endless long streets, but places with their own character and perception. You feel good because of the humane surroundings, use of natural materials and warm colors, you get a feeling of ease of where you are.
