Gasunie Headquarters, Groningen

The office of the Gasunie stands on the edge of Groningen and is a landmark for those approaching the city from the south or west. Our assignment was to create a multi-efficient, flexible heart for the Headquarters of the Gas Union

A huge vertical indoor street forms the binding element between the different floors. The organic character of the design is echoed throughout the interior of the building, even down to the specifically designed furniture. One of the most striking features of the interior is the use of colour in the foyer and stairwell. We chose earth tones for the structural elements like the columns and central pillar of the stairwell, to symbolize the building’s attachment to the ground.

More ‘atmospheric’ shades are used for the other components, ranging through all the colours of the rainbow. The staircase, which connects floors and people, is located in the middle of the building. The walking distances are also kept short to enhance the communication with one another.

By integrating much greenery and ponds throughout the interior an agreeable climate was created.

In 2007 it was chosen as the most beautiful building of all time by the Dutch public.
